The Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) course prepares pilots to teach and mentor aspiring aviators, enhancing their knowledge of flight maneuvers, instructional techniques, and student management. Becoming a CFI is a great way to build flight hours while developing advanced piloting and teaching skills.
Hold a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) or Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate
Be at least 18 years old
Hold at least a Third-Class Medical Certificate
English proficiency (must be able to read, speak, write, and understand English)
Instructional techniques and student psychology
Lesson planning and effective teaching strategies
FAA regulations and endorsement procedures
25-30 hours of instructional flight training, including:
Teaching basic flight maneuvers
Emergency procedures and student management
Conducting cross-country instructional flights
Knowledge Tests:
Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI) Test
Flight Instructor Airplane (FIA) Test
Practical Test (Checkride):
Demonstrate teaching ability and flight maneuver proficiency to FAA standards
